Marks in the Scrub

Based on a series of word and image conversations between Jirrbal Traditional Owner, Ernie Grant, Valerie Keenan, workshop participants and visiting artist Dr Pamela Croft Warcon this project incorporated cultural exchange, transfer of knowledge project and skills development in an on-country experience.

The Marks in the Scrub workshops and excursions to places of significance in the vicinity of the Davidson and Michael Creeks in the upper reaches of the Tully River Valley were aimed at helping participants think about the “why, what, where, when and how ” of creative processes and how to relate their own stories of their lives, their culture, of the environment and connection to place in visual mediums.  There were a number of participants involved in the workshops who had not had this kind of interaction before and not worked in a visual manner and so this project was a whole new learning experience for them.  This process has since been adopted on a number of occasions by the Echo Creek Cultural Centre.
